Course Overview

Collaboration between parents and teachers, especially on the issue of what contributes to a toddler's challenging behavior is the secret ingredient towards creating and sustaining a rich learning environment for the child. In this workshop participants will explore how to identify the underlying causes of behavior through an empathetic lens, promoting a deeper understanding of the child's needs. The session will focus on fostering an understanding of behavior that is common to parents and teachers alike, in order to promote effective collaboration between the parties. We will explore practical ABA-based strategies to support positive behavior, improve communication, and create a consistent, nurturing environment for toddlers that extends from the classroom to the home. Attendees will leave with tools to build stronger partnerships and create more compassionate, effective behavioral interventions that the child can benefit from across these settings.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the main functions of behavior.
  • Prioritize behaviors to change based on the importance of change to the child first and foremost through a compassionate lens.
  • Define reinforcement and its formal use in fostering positive behaviors.
  • Use a descriptive assessment tool to determine the function of behavior for a child.
  • Communicate and address common gaps in understanding of a child's challenging behavior with the parent/teacher.
