Course Overview

This training explores developmentally appropriate approaches to assessment in early childhood classrooms and challenges the overreliance on worksheets, tests and excessive tracking. Participants will examine how young children actually learn and how assessment systems can be redesigned to support understanding rather than performance. The session combines research-based input with experiential activities and practical planning to help educators implement meaningful, observation-led, and play-based assessment methods in their own classrooms and schools.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Explain the limitations of worksheet- and test-based assessment in early years
  • Describe how young children learn and why assessment must be developmentally appropriate
  • Identify effective alternatives to conventional assessment practices
  • Design assessment approaches aligned with play-based and child-centred learning
  • Develop strategies for tracking and reporting progress without excessive testing
  • Plan practical changes that can be implemented in their classrooms or schools
