Course Overview

Students come to school daily from their systems of origin - their families, communities, and cultures, where they may experience acute or chronic causes of trauma. Usually, this shows up in behaviors, like increased aggression or reduced interest in their studies in students, and increased time off or strained relationships in teachers. Fortunately, given the relational nature of education, schools can also be places of exceptional healing and support. Understanding a child's traumatic stress can enable educators and leaders to create environments and learning experiences that support them in learning and performing to their best, and to prevent new or further traumatic stress.

Learning Outcomes:

• Understand traumatic stress within and outside of schools.
• Recognize signs of traumatic stress in students.
• Provide supportive experiences that help individuals experiencing traumatic stress.
